You take off your favorite ring at the end of the day. There it is. A faint green tint on your finger.
Before you panic, or worse, toss the piece: this doesn't mean your jewelry is cheap. It doesn't mean something is wrong. It means you've been wearing real bronze.
Bronze has been worn, treasured, and worked by human hands for over 5,000 years. The Statue of Liberty is made of it. Ancient coins and artifacts forged from it survive to this day in near-perfect condition. And yes, sometimes it leaves a little green on your skin.
Here's what's actually happening, why it's harmless, and how to keep it from happening if you'd rather it didn't.
What you'll discover:
- Why bronze jewelry turns some people's skin green
- Why it's completely safe and says nothing about quality
- What makes Nina Designs bronze different
- Simple steps to prevent or reduce skin discoloration
- How to care for your bronze pieces so they last
Why Does Bronze Jewelry Turn Skin Green?
The short answer: copper.
Bronze is an alloy of approximately 90% copper and 10% tin. Copper, when it comes into contact with moisture, sweat, and the natural acids on your skin, undergoes a process called oxidation. That reaction produces copper compounds, including copper carbonate and copper chloride, which appear as a blue-green residue. The same chemistry is why the Statue of Liberty turned from warm copper-gold to her iconic green patina.
On your skin, this shows up as a faint green tint. It's temporary, harmless, and washes off easily. It is not a sign of a rash, an allergy, or a problem with the jewelry.
Does Everyone React the Same Way?
Not at all. Skin chemistry varies from person to person. People with more acidic sweat or lower skin pH tend to experience discoloration more quickly. Humidity, heat, lotions, soaps, and how much you sweat all play a role. You might wear a bronze ring for months without any green, then notice it suddenly during a hot summer. Your skin, not the jewelry, changed.
It's also worth knowing: green skin from bronze is not an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to jewelry are usually caused by nickel. Nina Designs bronze is nickel-free, so if you see green, it's copper oxidation, not an allergy.
Is It Safe to Wear?
Yes. Completely. The green is copper salts transferring to the surface of your skin. It washes off. It won't absorb into your body in any meaningful way. Copper has been worn directly on skin for thousands of years and is not dangerous at these trace levels.
If you experience itching, redness, or a rash from jewelry, that's a different matter and more likely a nickel sensitivity. Since our bronze contains no nickel, that reaction shouldn't come from wearing Nina Designs pieces.
About Nina Designs Bronze
Not all bronze is the same. Ours is made from a high-quality Italian bronze alloy. The composition is approximately 90% copper and 10% tin. It contains no nickel and no zinc.
Each piece includes an anti-tarnish compound in the alloy itself. This helps slow oxidation and keeps the warm golden finish looking its best for longer. Even so, bronze is a living metal. It will naturally develop patina over time. That's not a flaw. That's character.
Over time, your bronze pieces develop a finish that's uniquely yours. Deeper tones. A warmth that's been worn in. Like all beautiful things, they change. Find bronze statement pieces in our Bold & Gold Collection.Â
How to Prevent Bronze from Turning Your Skin Green
A few simple habits make a big difference.
1. Keep It Dry
Moisture is the main accelerant. We recommend removing bronze jewelry before washing your hands, showering, or swimming. The less moisture and soap it encounters while on your skin, the better.
2. Store It Away from Air
When you're not wearing your bronze pieces, store them in an airtight ziplock bag. This limits exposure to oxygen and slows the natural oxidation process. Keep bronze as dry as possible in storage.
3. Apply a Clear Barrier
A thin coat of clear nail polish on the inside of rings or the back of pendants creates a barrier between the metal and your skin. You'll need to reapply it occasionally as it wears down, but it's one of the most effective solutions, especially for rings worn close to the skin.
4. Avoid Contact with Lotions and Perfume
Lotions, sunscreen, perfume, and hairspray all contain compounds that react with copper. Apply these products first, let them absorb, then put on your jewelry. Remove pieces before applying any of these products.
5. Clean Regularly
A gentle polish with a soft cloth removes surface tarnish before it has a chance to transfer. For more thorough cleaning, visit our jewelry care guide for step-by-step instructions.

The Beauty of Bronze Patina
Here's a different way to think about it.
Bronze developing patina isn't a defect. It's what bronze does. The Statue of Liberty. Ancient coins. Sculptures thousands of years old. They are beloved, in part, because of the way they've aged.
The deeper tones and shifting warmth of worn bronze tell a story. Your story. The pieces that develop the most character are the ones worn closest to the skin, the ones carried with you every day.
At Nina Designs, we've worked with bronze alongside sterling silver for decades. Not because it's trendy. Because it's beautiful, ancient, and meaningful. The warm golden glow of bronze alongside the cool luminosity of silver is a combination that feels alive. Rooted in nature and ancient symbolism. Crafted by hand. Made to be worn.
When to Choose Sterling Silver Instead
If skin discoloration is a concern you'd rather not navigate, our sterling silver collection is a wonderful alternative. Sterling silver (.925) contains only 7.5% copper, making it far less likely to leave a mark. Many of our designs are available in both metals, so you can choose the finish that works best for you.
Our mixed metal pieces also pair bronze and sterling silver in the same design, letting you enjoy the warmth of bronze in earrings or pendants while keeping rings in silver if that's your preference.
